Solar panels are arrays of solar cells that make use of what’s known as the photovoltaic effect. We are more likely to have learned about the photoelectric effect in school, in which electrons were ejected from the surface of some materials when it was exposed to light or other forms of radiation. The photovoltaic effect is related but different. Instead of being electrons ejected from the surface, in the photovoltaic effect electrons move around in the material creating a difference in voltage.

It was Shakespeare who popularized the words “Et tu, Brute?” (meaning “And you, Brutus?”). 6 Rapper who plays Fin on “Law & Order: SVU” : ICE-T
Rapper Ice-T must be tired of having his name come up as an answer in crossword puzzles (I know I am!). Born Tracy Marrow, Ice-T has been interested in acting for decades and made his film debut in the 1984 movie about breakdancing called “Breakin’”. He has also played Detective Fin Tutuola in the TV show “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” since the year 2000.
“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” is a spin-off from the TV crime drama “Law & Order”. “SVU” has been on the air since 1999, and is set in New York City. Interestingly (to me), there is a very successful Russian adaptation of the show that is set in Moscow.
7 Toppled Iranian leader : SHAH
The last Shah of Iran was Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, who was overthrown in the revolution led by Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979. The post-revolution government sought the extradition of the Shah back to Iran while he was in the United States seeking medical care (he had cancer). His prolonged stay in the United States, recovering from surgery, caused some unrest back in Iran and resentment towards the United States. Some say that this resentment precipitated the storming of the US Embassy in Tehran and the resulting hostage crisis.

Homeowner’s association (HOA)
The terms “condominium” and “apartment” tend to describe the same type of residential property, namely a private living space with facilities shared with others residing in the same building or complex. The difference is that a condominium is usually owned, and an apartment is rented. At least that’s how it is in the US. The word “condominium” comes from the Latin “com-” (together) and “dominum” (right of ownership).

“Close My Eyes Forever” is a track from Lita Ford’s 1988 album “Lita”. It is a duet, sung with Ozzy Osbourne. Apparently, the pair wrote the lyrics together by accident after drinking heavily in a recording studio. I am not sure how that works …
60 Cul-de-__ : SAC
Even though “cul-de-sac” can indeed mean “bottom-of-the-bag” in French, the term “cul-de-sac” is of English origin. The term was introduced in aristocratic circles at a time when it was considered very fashionable to speak French. Harder than expected for a Monday, at least for me. Three errors and two lookups.
Hopefully, the rest of the week will be better.
Started with SCHLUB for 28D. Figured CBS was 51A. Then turned on my non-professional jewish/ polish speaking hat and said “schlub” doesn’t sound right? And maybe CBS wasn’t right. SCHLUM sounded better and maybe CMS was Country Music Station? so I went with SCHLUM!!!!!!!!
NOPE!!!
9:08, no errors
7:40, no errors. Fun Monday, wasn’t aware of the short story, will have to check it out.
Fun puzzle..I must have missed my Yiddish class the day they had”Schlub”…but it fill so I left it…who woulda thunk I learned a new word???
Two setters for a Monday puzzle?
Stay safe😀
7 mins 36 seconds and 2 errors: IT[T]Y where I had ITSY, and didn’t proofread the cross. My bad. Otherwise decent puzzle, especially for a duo effort, which almost always ends in tears.
Had to Google for HOA. Had SEAt instead of SEAM, thus TOtETI rather than TOMETI.
8:33 – no errors, lookups, or false starts.
New or forgotten: SCHLUB, Amy RYAN, “Fin on L&O: SVU,” Ayo TOMETI, “Comfortably NUMB,” “Close My Eyes Forever,” LITA Ford.
An okay theme, but no great shakes.
A bit tough for a Monday; took 13:40 with no peeks or errors. Started off good in the top half and then got bogged down in several places in the bottom. I just put in ICE T when I say rapper/Law & Order, even though I never watched it. Had to revisit MANcure and myGOD.
No idea on CBS, TMC, RYAN, TOMETI, LITA (watched a little of the video…meh). Remembered the short story from the last time it appeared, having taken the time to read it.
