  1. 37 min, no errors

I kinda got the theme early but didn’t figure out where to insert/remove the BRITA letters until much later.

Didn’t help that I misapplied 70A / 73A for 70A / 72A. BRITA TEA? so spent several minutes spinning my wheels.

UBISOFT was unknown to me. Had to let crosses fill it in.

  2. USC and the NET of TELNET took me over a sixth of the time I spent on this one, and theme-wise I also struggled to remember Clue items other than the rope and the candle and had no idea on “MARQUETTE” — not much of a sports fan.

Otherwise I liked this one and got through it pretty quickly with no errors. I know a lot of people here dislike the “remove the letters” themes but I tend to like them much better than the “the clues tell a story” themes like yesterday’s (which, to be fair, is a better application of that type of theme than most).

    1. I can appreciate that. I typcally don’t like the missing letters because the clue and the missing letter answers are incongruent (don’t align/make no sense)

  3. Really weak. Never got the quirk of leaving out letters. Answers much too thin. Verging(61A), Sturdy(59A) ??

  4. I thought I had the theme early but I had only sussed out the R being removed. Got frustrated quickly, so hands up as someone who doesn’t like removed letters, particularly different ones each time. Don’t like bubbles either😅.
Needless to say, it took way too long and I had multiple lookups.

  5. 25:52 – no errors or lookups, but this felt like a Saturday! Four false starts related to the themed answers before I figured out what the “filtering” scheme is; also LICIT>LUCID.

New or forgotten: UBISOFT, “telera,” “cha” tea, ALLIE Quigley, Lisa LING, MSR brand, Lesley GORE (although I recognize her most popular songs).

Quite a clever theme. Early on, it seemed that some letters were intentionally omitted in the answers to the starred clues, but I couldn’t figure out which ones or why. So, I focused in getting 70A and 73A solved. Then, it came to me with bALLbOYS and BrEADrOLL. Probably could not have solved the entire puzzle without that.

It’s also interesting to note that the filled-in answers to the starred clues are legitimate words in themselves. Pretty good, Will Pfadenhauer!

  6. This is Not a crossword puzzle !
It may be a clever ‘game’ , but No individual who has done crossword puzzles for decades , would identify today’s ? – whatever as a crossword puzzle.. What would a Wil Short say ??

    1. I agree – it would be helpful if, in future, non-crosswords of this nature are clearly identified as word jumbles, so that crossword aficionados do not waste time on them!

  7. Not only do I HATE removed letters—-‘way too much trivia here, practically no
    “word play.”

  8. 2 errors…zita for ziti and neo for ned.😥
Ubisoft was marked as a theme clue in my paper edition.
    Stay safe😀

  9. 26ish minutes with two errors. Spent about 5 minutes on the center and still messed it up: had SOASK instead of GOASK for 41A.
I will echo one or two others – this one was a lot of fun!

  10. I’m sorry, but … trick themes like this are just pure, aggravating BULLSH*T.

17 mins, 27 seconds and a little bit of Check Grid to help me figure out some of the “unforced errors” and “intentional typos” of this stupid grid.

This constructor gets an instant add to my “Skip in the future” list.

  11. Rather obscure and very difficult to solve without being aware of these tricks of removing letters etc

I am in very indifferent health and it’s not worth my effort or time to incorporate new ideas

Bill I am however extremely grateful for your wonderful blog and what I learnt from it was ten times more than I could take away from the puzzle itself. God bless you.

  12. I got the theme, but it took a while (26:48, clean). Like Linda, BEADOLL threw me as well, since it — unlike the other theme words — isn’t a word but a phrase. I begrudgingly have to admit it was a clever theme, but beadoll was a bit of a round word in a square hole. So clever, but not perfect.

  13. Sigh – another ridiculous theme. Agree with all the negative comments, especially about this not being a true crossword puzzle. Waste of my time I’ll never get back. 😠

  14. I enjoyed the theme. My biggest problem was when completing VERGING, I forgot that I was looking for two a’s. I also had ACCEpt > ACCEDE and couldn’t remember NEO.
