Then a rule was introduced requiring that a warning be given if capture was imminent (today we announce “check!”) so that an accidental and early ending to the game doesn’t occur.

I’m not understanding “hit on” for 16 across.
When you ask for a person’s phone #, I suppose you are “hitting on” her/him.
That’s probably better than my guess. I had first thought it related to games of chance (and so put in BETON); and still thought that with HITON, as in the game of 21.
Exchange phone NUMBERS; that is, HIT ON someone.
44 min, no errors. Missed Bill’s time by just a bit.
So that’s what I have. DOMS! never knew it had a name. Now I have an out.
“I have significant DOMS today, so could you grab me a beer from the fridge babe!”.
I think my wife would throw the guiness bottle at my head if I said that.
From a chess player – nobody says “I lose” when they are mated.
Clean tok ?
24:51 – no errors or lookups. False starts: RAP>YAP, NSA>CIA, BETON>HITON, LOOK>LOOP, CAMERAS>WEBCAM, LETME>LEMME.
A rare successful Saturday for me – no lookups! The bottom half filled in first, and the top half took some cogitating and trial-and-error. It helped to recall the ESSIE brand, the MOREL mushroom, and what Yondr pouches are. But, I didn’t understand “mate’s response” until I read Bill’s explanation.
New or forgotten: “DOMS,” ASTRANGELOOP, CLEANTOK, HAL Sparks, ENID the werewolf, “Perfect Pairings.”
Did not know (or remember) that tilapia (which we have regularly at our house) is a warmwater fish.
Duplicate clues: “frying medium,” “polish brand.
For 25D I had pain which made more sense to me than gain .
Stay safe😀
“Play ball”⚾️
Couldn’t finish with most of my trouble in the NE corner.
Way too tough for me today, a day late; took 52:48 with 20-25 errors and numerous peeks and 2 alphabet rolls.
I did manage most of the bottom half, except for 1 error at LEtME, but the top half I only had very very sparsely filled. Eventually sorted it all out with a lot of help.
