You can pick up all sorts of clues about the location when watching the film, including a view of Sydney Harbour Bridge in a background shot. Also, traffic drives along on the left and there are signs for the “lift” instead of an “elevator”.

37 Short hairstyles : BOBS
A bob cut is a short hairstyle in which the hair is cut straight around the head, at about the line of the jaw. Back in the 1570s, “bob” was the name given to a horse’s tail that was cut short, and about a century later it was being used to describe short hair on humans. The style became very popular with women in the early 1900s (as worn by actress Clara Bow, for example), with the fashion dying out in the thirties. The style reemerged in the sixties around the time the Beatles introduced their “mop tops”, with Vidal Sassoon leading the way in styling women’s hair in a bob cut again. Personally, I like it …

The U-Haul company was started by married couple Leonard Shoen and Anna Mary Carty in Ridgefield, Washington in 1945. There are now about 15,000 U-Haul dealers across the country.

3 Spot where cocktails may be shaken or stirred : MARTINI BAR

40 Hair removal brand : NAIR
Nair is a hair-removal product that has some pretty harsh ingredients. The most important active constituents are calcium hydroxide (“slaked lime”) and sodium hydroxide (“caustic soda”). Other Nair components seem to be there to soothe the skin after the harsher chemicals have done their job. The name “Nair” probably comes from combining “no” and “hair”.
44 __ Vegas : LAS
Back in the 1800s, the Las Vegas Valley was given its name from the extensive meadows (“las vegas” is Spanish for “the meadows”) present in the area courtesy of the artesian wells drilled by local farmers. Las Vegas was incorporated as a city in 1905, in the days when it was a stopping-off point for pioneers traveling west. It eventually became a railroad town, although with the coming of the railroad growth halted as travelers began to bypass Las Vegas. The city’s tourism industry took off in 1935 with the completion of the nearby Hoover Dam, which is still a popular attraction. Then gambling was legalized, and things really started to move. Vegas was picked, largely by celebrated figures in “the mob”, as a convenient location across the California/Nevada state line that could service the vast population of Los Angeles. As a result, Las Vegas is the most populous US city founded in the 20th century (Chicago is the most populous city founded in the 19th century, just in case you were wondering).

Pretty simple Monday. The theme went completely unnoticed.
Must be some not-so-great reviews if no comments are shown.
I thought it was good for a Monday.
7 minutes, no errors.
Typical Monday.
ARO? Seriously? Who comes up with these?
Good Monday puzzle. Pretty straight forward without too many Rap or texting g acronyms that always confound this baby boomer. Never heard of Garbage Time, but I’m not a Sports person, so maybe that was an easy answer for others.
“Garbage time” was a term invented and popularized by the LA Lakers hall of fame announcer, the great Chick Hearn. The term expanded to encompass other sports that have final minutes that are played in a completely different “style” than the rest of the game up to that point. Chick Hearn also had a great little bit he’d recite in garbage time, once the game was out of reach: “This game’s in the refrigerator, folks. The eggs are cooling, the Jell-o’s jiggling and the butter’s getting hard”. Other Chick-isms include “the popcorn machine” (where a player would fake taking a shot and get the defender to jump into the air, and then come back down and foul the shooter for a chance at a 3-point play), “the mustard’s off the hot dog” (someone would make a fool of himself trying to pull off a highlight reel play), the “bunny hop” a traveling call caused by a player taking a short (and illegal) movement of the feet, prior to driving for the basket; this was a bad habit of one James Worthy who would often be caught bunny-hopping. Chick also named Kareem Abul Jabbar’s Sky Hook shot, and I believe he came up with the term “slam dunk” too. He was a master at his art.
Thanks for the explanation Civil War buff! Maybe that will help me remember if I see that one again.
5:03, no errors. I could tell from the get-go that today was going to be a good day to attempt a speed run.
Tried a new technique today at least for me when as fast as I could filling in across…ignoring the downs I knew…finished the second time thru….but still could not come close to Bills time….have to learn to write faster.,..fun puzzle for a Monday
7:06 – no errors, lookups, or false starts.
New or forgotten: “Hannah Einbinder,” AVA Daniels.
A simple theme that wasn’t needed for solving, but is a little interesting, anyway.
5 mins 36 sec, and needed Check Grid help to find errors affecting 6 fills.
Nice and easy Monday for me; took 6:18 with no peeks or errors and going as fast as I can. Didn’t know AVA, the BAR part of MARTINI BAR and although I knew both, I had to wait for a few crosses on LITTER… and GARBAGE…
Didn’t use the theme, but it certainly makes sense after the fact.
Dropped in for an explanation to ARO which was new to me. Thanks, Bill!
Absolutely loved the comments on Garbage Time.
Great bonus and so interesting.
Thank you, Civil War Buff!
